Taunton & District Mencap Society is one of five Local Mencap Societies in Somerset and is affiliated to National MENCAP. We encourage those with learning disabilities to become involved with organised activities and offer help and support to individuals, their families and carers. We also have a caravan on the Dorset Coast where we offer discounted holidays to people with learning disabilities and their families.

Taunton Mencap was established in 1956 and became a Registered Charity in 1962. The organisation is run by an Executive Committee consisting of volunteers who all have direct experience, either personally or professionally of learning disabilities. We have one employee - Judith our Development Officer - who has helped heighten Taunton Mencap's profile and increased the level of activity for our members.

HELP! We need more volunteers. If you live in the Taunton area and would be prepared to give up some spare time on an occasional basis to help out on Taunton Mencap events we would love to hear from you. As well as helping us, volunteering can give you the opportunity to make new friends and feel better about yourself, while doing something really worthwhile in the community. All volunteers must undertake a C.R.B. check. Please e-mail: rajsugars@tiscali.co.uk

Taunton Mencap accepts membership applications from all individuals with learning disabilities within the Taunton Deane area as well as from families and groups/homes. Membership is consistently increasing, particularly among those with learning disabilities living independently within the community. Members receive regular newsletters and mailings about events and activities.

New members will be made very welcome and encouraged to feel part of this friendly and active society.
